Starting at 6:00PM, there will be a social hour to enjoy conversation, a picnic style dinner, and voluntee sign-up for fall work dates. At 7:00PM, we will hold a brief business meeting followed by a presentation: “From Dropoff to Resource Recovery – Understanding Recycling in Glastonbury”. Our guest speakers are Jeff LeMay, Director of Wastewater, Refuse, and Recycling for the Town of Glastonbury, and Nick Malouin, Food Waste Program Specialist with USA & All-American Waste.
Have you ever wondered what happens to your trash and recyclables after you drop them off at your local waste and recycling centers? This presentation takes a behind-the-scenes look at how municipal solid waste and recycling are managed in Glastonbury, following materials from collection to their final destination. Participants will learn where trash and recyclables go, how they are transported and processed, and why proper sorting is essential to an effective recycling system.
The presentation will also cover common recycling dos and don’ts, helping residents avoid contamination and recycle with confidence. Attendees will discover how Glastonbury’s Food Waste Diversion Program transforms food scraps into valuable resources, including clean energy and soil products, and explore practical composting options that can reduce household waste at home. The presentation will also highlight how organizations can identify food waste diversion opportunities, design effective collection systems, improve participation, reduce contamination, and ultimately divert more organic material from disposal through anaerobic digestion and other beneficial reuse methods.
In addition, we will examine the important roles of the Town’s Transfer Station and Bulky Waste Facility, including the types of materials accepted, how these facilities support waste reduction efforts, and the long-term goals they serve in promoting sustainability and responsible resource management. By understanding the complete waste and recycling system, residents can make informed choices that help conserve resources, reduce disposal costs, and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable Glastonbury.
Our Guest Speaker
Jeff LeMay serves as the Director of Wastewater, Refuse, and Recycling for the Town of Glastonbury. He began his career in wastewater management with the Town of South Windsor, where he worked as a wastewater operator for five years before being promoted to Treatment Plant Supervisor, a position he held for seven years.
In his current role with Glastonbury, Jeff oversees a broad range of municipal environmental services, including wastewater treatment, solid waste management, and recycling operations. He is responsible for the management of the Town’s Water Pollution Control Facility, Transfer Station, and Bulky Waste Landfill, ensuring the efficient operation of critical public infrastructure and environmental programs.
Prior to entering the wastewater profession, Jeff earned both a Connecticut Arborist License and UConn Master Gardener Certification, reflecting his longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship and natural resource management.
