4/6/2024 – Saturday 9AM – Welles Shipman Ward House (972 Main St., South Glastonbury) – Spring Clean-up of the Colonial Kitchen Garden. It doesn’t take long as the garden is not too big. Bring: gloves, spade, hoe, clippers, and personal drinking water. Rain date: 4/13 @9AM
4/8/2024 – Monday 11AM – Salmon Brook Gardens (East and West) (Main St. near car wash and Best Cleaners) – General spring clean-up: raking, weeding, pruning. We’ll start on the west side in front of the cleaners and cross over to the car wash garden next. Rain date: 4/11 @ 11AM
4/20/2024 – Saturday 8:30AM to 10AM – Rt 17 Median Gardens (intersection of Main St. & Rt. 17) – Spring Clean-up. Park off Buttonball Lane, Shipman nursery driveway on the right, please grab a safety vest when crossing the streetto the gardens. Tasks: edge, weed as necessary, prune woody plants, rake out as necessary, dead head daffodils, divide irises, and whatever else we find. Tools if you have them: tarp, bucket, hand pruners, loppers, weed digger, hand shovel, edger, work gloves, personal water. Rain date: 4/27 @ same time
4/21/2024 – Sunday 11AM to 3PM – Welles Shipman Ward House (972 Main St., South Glastonbury) – Militia Day – We will be marking out the garden and planting early sowing vegetables. This is a fun event for all. GPIP volunteers attend for free. Parking will be at the St Augustine’s Church on Hopewell Road. Follow signs to the footpath
5/4/2024 – Saturday 9AM – Buckingham Park Garden (1285 Manchester Rd., Glastonbury next to Fire Station) – Spring Clean-up and mulching for this small but beautiful garden that showcases the entrance to Buckingham Park. Tools: shovels, buckets and rakes, as well as hand tools. Mini wheelbarrows or garden carts are helpful too! Rain Date: 5/5 @ 9AM (second rain date, if needed: 5/11 @ 9AM)
5/20/2024 – Monday 10AM – WTM Library (2407 Main St. – front entrance & patio) – It’s time to make the entrance of the library beautiful by planting annuals and sprucing up the patio perennial garden. Rain date: 5/21 @ 10AM
5/22/2024 – Wednesday 10AM – Town Center Planters (Location TBD) – Annuals will be planted in many planters to be placed around town. You’ll see the rewards of your efforts every time you pass through town during the summer months. Rain date: 5/23 @ 10AM
5/23/2024 – Thursday 2PM – South Glastonbury Planters (865 Main St., South Glastonbury – at picnic tables in parking lot) – Spring planting for added beauty in South Glastonbury. Annuals will be planted at various sites. Rain date: 5/24 @ 2PM
Date and Time TBD – Village Green Planters (39 Knox Lane, Glastonbury) – Spring planting for added beauty for the residents. Annuals will be planted in many planters at various locations around the property. Fun project. The residents are very appreciative of our work.
6/2/2024 – Sunday 1PM to 4PM – Welles Shipman Ward House (972 Main St., South Glastonbury)- “Step Back in Time” Event – GPIP will finish planting the garden and we will have activities for families/children which will include making this year’s scarecrow. GPIP volunteers attend for free. Parking will be at the St Augustine’s Church on Hopewell Road. Follow signs to the footpath.
7/6/2024 – Saturday 1PM to 4PM – Welles Shipman Ward House (972 Main St., South Glastonbury) – Open House/Tours Represent GPIP at our information table and work in the garden if it is not too hot. Scarecrow will be dressed up as Waldo for the day!
4/20/2024 Saturday @ 9AM to 2PM – Earth Day Fair at Congregational Church of South Glastonbury. We will have an information table at this event along with some small activities for children.If you are a GPIP member or volunteer and would like to help, just show up. You do not have to be present for the entire event.
5/11/2024 Saturday @ 3PM – Invasive Plant Walk (Riverfront Park near the Dog Park) – GPIP is offering an Adult Education class/walk in conjunction with the Glastonbury Adult Education (non-profit) to help them offer programs of all types. A GPIP member will lead the walk pointing out the invasive plants and answering questions on the various types. Other GPIP members will be there to assist. Rain date: 5/12 @ 3PM
All Summer – Educational Garden @ the Town Community Gardens (to the east side of Herbert T. Clark House) Two plots have been donated by Parks & Recreation to allow GPIP the opportunity to show how to grow vegetables both in the ground and in pots. One plot will be devoted to the education of planting potatoes while one plot will offer more traditional vegetables. All produce from both gardens will be donated to the self-service Foodbank in Glastonbury. The gardens open on 4/27 and will close on 10/6. Planting will happen after the last frost. The garden will be open at various times (to be determined & posted) for viewing the garden and answering questions. Help is needed from members and volunteers all summer long. Offer an hour or more anytime during the summer. We’re near a shaded area so you can bring your chair and read while enjoying the garden.
Community Garden Kiosk – The kiosk will house food donation bins, to collect both fresh produce or other non-perishable foods and offers a little free library for books and seeds. GPIP needs members or volunteers to help pick up produce/food from the kiosk and deliver to the Foodbank at the Riverfront Community Center.
Farmers Market – Once a month GPIP hosts an informational table at the Farmers Market (Hubbard Green). GPIP members enjoy speaking with people about our organization and offering any gardening advice they can. This is only once a month in the morning starting in June. Exact Dates and times will be advised soon. Let us know if you want to join in on this fun event.

This project was postponed from last year, so we are trying to complete it before the end of 2023. We have approximately 10 to 13 small shrubs and trees to install. It shouldn’t take long.
Bring your gloves, shovel and personal refreshment.
Park at one of two locations and then walk to the Drainage Area:
1) Shipman Nursery on Buttonball Lane (up the driveway on the right at the intersection of Main St. and Buttonball) walk to site

2) Earle Park & American Legion building on Main St. walk to site

Two locations are offered this year. Town Center and South Glastonbury Center (Nayaug)
Bring your gloves, snips for cutting small branches, and a smile. This is a really fun event. You can come to help create just one planter or help with many.
If you have any evergreens or items of nature that are of interest, feel free to bring those with you. We can never have enough.
Location 1: Town Center – Meet at the corner of Hebron Ave & Main St in front of the stone wall (Panera side).
Location 2: South Glastonbury – Meet at the parking lot of Olympic Pizza

Pruning woody plants as necessary. We are planning to leave the leaves where we can. Location: The intersection of Rt. 17 & Main St. Park up the hill in the Shipman Nursery. Pickup a GPIP safety vest from the box at the bottom of the driveway on your way over to the medians.
